Eight Questions

I'm about to head out to do some writing at Barnes & Noble. I haven't been in a couple weeks & I'm going through withdrawals. Then I plan to spend the afternoon in blog land, which I've been neglecting this week.

In the meantime, I was thinking. How well do I actually know the people who follow my blog and/or I follow?  So anyway, if you could look at my questions below and give me your social security number and blood type that would be great! Obviously, I'm joking -- I can't even remember my own social security number half the darn time.

These are just some easy questions I think it would be fun to know about one another! If there's one you don't feel comfortable answering, it's okay to skip it. :o) And even if you're new, or lurking, I still want to hear from ya!

*raises hand*

I'll go first.

1) Name: Tracy

2) Family Situation: single, no kids. Hope to change that someday, but for now it stands.

3) Project Status: Gemini Cursed is my first ever finished story. After a brief false start, it is now polished & ready to re-begin the querying process.

4) How long did it take me to write? From first word, to finished revisions (and even now I'm still playing around with the ending a tad) -- it took me seven months total.

5) First thing I'll do upon landing an agent/ publishing deal? After I scream into my pillow for a good five-ten minutes, I'll start furiously working on my third ms. Wanting to stay ahead of the pace for when my agent (hopefully) asks to see more work.

6) Favorite non-writing activity? My love for baseball has obviously been covered, so I'm going to have to go with reading. I'm the kind of person that doesn't mind doing "short reads", as in if I've got five free minutes I'm fine with knocking out a page or two of whichever book I'm currently reading.

7) One totally random fact about myself?  I'm actually certified to be a canine obedience instructor -- yet the only dogs who have benefited from that are my own. I wanted to look into a future of training service dogs, but for some reason I haven't put in the time or energy to pursue it further.

8) Why do I think people will want to read my story if/when it's published? Hmmm, good question. On the days when my insecurity isn't telling me that my story sucks and no one will ever want to read it, I'd have to say ... it's a fairly unique twist on a love story. More than anything, I believe I was lucky enough to create characters that I think people will like and want to root for.

Okay, so now it's your alls (a phrase that will not be found in any of my writings) turn!

1) Name:

Jessica Carmen Bell

2) Family Situation:

Engaged, no kids, pet dalmatian called Holly

3) Project Status:

Waiting on reply for one full ms request and one partial and about 40 more queries, for DEAD IN THE CORNER OF MY BEDROOM. I'm also obout a quarter of the way through two other projects, another novel and a memoir.

4) How long did it take me to write?

Whoah. Embarassing. Four years. So many revisions though I lost count.

5) First thing I'll do upon landing an agent/ publishing deal?

Die of shock.

6) Favorite non-writing activity?
Aside from also playing guitar and singing, it'll have to be watching Grey's Anatomy or Bones.

7) One totally random fact about myself?

On my god I can't believe I'm gonna admit to this ... my first long term ever serious relationship was with a girl. *wince*

8) Why do I think people will want to read my story if/when it's published?

Because I think it steers women's fiction away from the stereotypically glorified woman that is most commonly portrayed today and replaces with pure honesty instead. Not every woman in this world lives without regret, knows exactly what they want, and has the courage to put every essence of their being into achieving their dreams. Not every woman is inspirational to others. Not every woman can leave their comfort zone to better their future. But, so what? Does that mean a less strong-minded woman doesn't have an interesting story to tell? Definitely not. Well, that's my argument anyway :)

Great idea for a post. I may borrow it at some point, if that's okay. :)

1) Name: Shannon

2) Family Situation: In a relationship. We've been together for 4.5 years and I'm finally ready to talk about marriage. We share our condo with two needy cats, Liger (my muse) and Tiggy.

3) Project Status: Urgh. First draft complete. Half-way though revisions.

4) How long did it take me to write? Five months for the first draft...1.5 months for revisions so far.

5) First thing I'll do upon landing an agent/ publishing deal? I will do my happy dance, pop open a bottle of champagne, call my parents and make a blog post. :)

6) Favorite non-writing activity?
I love to cook, drink wine, read, and travel. It's been a few years since I've been to Italy and I long to go back.

7) One totally random fact about myself? I was a jell-o shot girl before they existed. I worked in an underground night club as the Kamikaze Nurse. I was dressed in a skimpy nurse costume and sold shots for a dollar.

8) Why do I think people will want to read my story if/when it's published? It's a great premise. :) I just need to overcome my self-doubt about my ability to write and engaging story.

2) Family Situation: It's complicated, for simple purposes, let's just say single.I have a beautiful daughter named Emily and lots of pets!!

3) Project Status: 1 novel done in rewrite mode. 1 novel done and completed edited. 1 wip that is 1/2 done. And lots of other randoms stuff.

5) First thing I'll do upon landing an agent/ publishing deal?
Faint.

6) Favorite non-writing activity? Reading, or just chilaxing with Em (that's my daughter)

7) One totally random fact about myself? I'm terrified of turning 30. Actually, I'm terrified of lots of things.

8) Why do I think people will want to read my story if/when it's published? Because it's awesome! Okay, so maybe not...because I think my story (stories) relate to people, their relationships, what they would like to have. It's romance and everyone loves a good love story, right? ;-)

1~ Gina

2~ Married, two kids (18 & 13), a dog named Dakota, a cat named Foxy Cleopatra and a snake named Stella.

3~ I am 31,000 words into my first WIP.

4~ I started this project about two years ago. Couldn't make up my mind on how I wanted to write it, so I kept going back and forth. I have finally made a decision.

5~ Probably pee my pants and pass out, not necessarily in that order.

6~ I have many. Riding my motorcycle is first on the list. Traveling, reading, water sports, basketball, volleyball, camping, rafting, I could go on and on.

7~ I have been a paralegal and played with toys for a living. I am also a licensed EMT and a licensed esthetician.

8~ Hmmm. This was one of the questions that kept going through my mind when I was trying to decide how I would write my novel. I decided I was just going to keep writing and think about that later when I have to revise.

Great idea for a post.

Name: Bohemienne. Sorry! I haven't settled on a good pen name yet!

Family: My boyfriend of 4 years and I currently share an apartment with a sheltie who thinks "personal space" means "crawl into your lap at every possible opportunity."

Project: UNDER A DEAD MOON was my 2009 NaNovel (my third win) and the first I felt has real potential. I stopped writing the NaNo draft at 58K, and I'm about 15K into my rewrites. (I'm REALLY bad about editing as I go.)

How Long: Had the story more or less figured out for 5 years now. Took me 30 days to write the first draft, then I let it cool off while I worked on something else, and now I've been serious about rewrites for about 6 weeks.

Celebration Time: I'll grab the boyfriend and we'll gorge ourselves on bratwurst burgers and the most ridiculously obscure craft beer we can find at our favorite restaurant!
...And then the next morning will be spent working on the sequel.

When I'm Not Writing: I'm reading, cooking, eating, lifting weights, or walking around lovely Washington DC. All while covered in Sheltie hair.

Random Fact: I have degrees in Russian Studies and Computer Security... neither of which have anything to do with writing or each other!

Why My Book?: Because I know I'm not the only one who always liked the bad guys best.

1) Name: Quill, from Bransford Forums

2) Family Situation: Single after having been married for years. We're still friends. No kids. No pets but love dogs.

3) Project Status: YA novel in hiatus whilst I make money to finance more revision time.

4) How long did it take me to write? First Draft: 18 months, 20 years ago. Heh. This past winter 3 rewrite drafts in 4 months. Next winter: polishing.

5) First thing I'll do upon landing an agent/ publishing deal? Shout Hallelujah. And probably Huzzah.

6) Favorite non-writing activity? Um, reading and studying the writing craft are pretty high on the list at the moment.

7) One totally random fact about myself? I used to enjoy nude hiking. Alone in the wilds.

8) Why do I think people will want to read my story if/when it's published? I'll go with Matthew's response: Because it's awesome.

Name: Terry Towery

Family situation: Married, three sons ages 12, 19, 20. I'm ashamed to say it's my third marriage.

Project status: First novel finished, out to beta readers. Second one started, first chapter done. I also have one at 17,000 words, but it's on hold.

How long did it take to write? A bit over two years, including several rewrites/revisions. I took eight months off where I wrote nothing while running a Congressional campaign in 2008.

First thing I'll do upon landing an agent/contract/publishing deal? Wait for the other shoe to drop. ;)

Favorite non-writing activity? I suppose watching/playing baseball would be right up there. Reading, too. And video games.

One totally random fact about myself? I spent two months in the jungles of South America in 2005, hunting for treasure with a group of guys. We now have a corporation that salvages sunken Spanish galleons. Really.

Why do you think people will want to read my story if/when it's published? I hope because it speaks to them in some way.

Fun post! I enjoyed learning more about you. I'm with Shannon; I might have to borrow this sometime to post on my own blog.

1) Name: Shelley

2) Family Situation: Just married in August 2009. No kids, but we have one really angry cat.

3) Project Status: 2 completed novels. I queried my first one (contemporary romance) last year with 2 partial requests but no bites for a full, so I'm about 3/4 of the way done rewriting it, and after betas look at it, I'll send it out again. My second book (commercial fiction) is too inundated with plot holes to see the light of day, but it was fun to write.

4) How long did it take me to write? Book 1 - 9 months; Book 2 - 6 months.

5) First thing I'll do upon landing an agent/ publishing deal? Hmm... I'll try to stay calm, but I'll end up shouting to the rooftops that I'm getting published... then I'll keep working on whatever WIP I have and maybe write outlines for future novel ideas.

6) Favorite non-writing activity? Reading, playing video games (or in some cases, watching my husband play, because I have *terrible* coordination), and watching TV.

7) One totally random fact about myself? I used to swear that I'd be a therapist when I grew up. I have a Bachelor's in Psych and dreamed about going to grad school and everything. Now, the most counseling I do is when my friends ask me for advice (all the time. I have to say I enjoy it.)

8) Why do I think people will want to read my story if/when it's published? I'm hoping that I'll attract an audience that loves to fall in love each time they read a book. That's what I aim to do, get readers so involved in the story that they're the one experiencing the character's joy and heartache (and then joy again... I like to end on a happy note.)

8) Why do I think people will want to read my story if/when it's published?
Because in my novel the bad guys win. If that's not intriguing enough, then you need to wake up.
