I'm Not Bitter...OK, Yes I Am!

Recently, Barnes & Noble announced the upcoming release of the fully colorized version of the Nook

Now, I only currently use mine to read e-books and review PDF’s of my own writing (during the later stages of editing). I haven’t used it for reading magazines and I’m more likely to use my BlackBerry than my Nook to access the internet. At this stage there is virtually NO reason for me to get the "Nook in Color".

But I want one… and can’t have it, because Karma is a beyotch!

Seriously. This is the second time I’ve fallen victim to B&N’s bad timing. (I fully contend it is THEIR timing that sucks, not mine)

Earlier this year--when I bought my first Nook--it just so happens I made my purchase purchase a MONTH  (as in 30 stinking days) before they slashed the price by about $100. *sigh*

Then two months ago (if that)--due to an unfortunate treadmill incident that we won't go into at this juncture--my Nook suffered a tiny comestic wound. A slight crack in the plastic casing (in a place few would even notice) which, had I bothered to read the manufacturer's warranty would have known was covered for the first year. Before one of the B&N staff was kind enough to point out the warranty oversight, I’d already bought a new one and given the other to my brother.

So that’s two times (in the past year) I’ve purchased an e-reader I didn’t absolutely need, a matter of weeks before a better deal came along. This…this is my typical luck with technology. *double sigh*

Blogger's Note:  Due to the craziness of adjusting to life with both NaNoWriMo & NaNoQuerMo at the same time, I've been a little bad about getting around to everyone's blog. Have no fear, by the end of the week I'm sure I'll have it all figured out...and if you've commented here, I'm definitely going to hit you up.

Happy Hump Day!!

To Read or Not to Read

While in the break room, getting our morning fix of coffee, a co-worker (who happens to also be a fellow Nook lover) and I had the following conversation…

Co-worker: So, have you been doing a lot of reading on your Nook lately?

Me: Unfortunately no, I’ve haven’t had much time. Between that and my stack of REAL books I’ve only read about 5-6 in the past two months since I got it. (Though I’ve purchased more than a dozen e-books in that span)

Co-worker: Um, I think that’s pretty good, actually.

I realized after that conversation just how widely people’s idea of the term “read a lot” varies. For me I’m most comfortable when I read approximately a book a week (more if I’m on vacation -- or unemployed). So reading only 5 over the course of eight weeks feels like slacking. Truthfully though, I hardly ever read ONE book exclusively. I usually have no less than two/no more than five in limbo going at any given point in time. So I suppose it’s more accurate to say I’m in the habit of FINISHING one book a week.

I tend to forget that this probably puts me more in the “voracious reader” category. I’m sure there are plenty of people who consider themselves faithful readers who don’t (nor do they want to) read at the rate that feels normal for me.

Long story short, I got curious and decided to unofficially poll my fellow blog buddies.

So, how much do you read under “normal” circumstances?

Revenge of the E-book

I’m going to make a concerted effort to get back to posting 3-4 times a week. I warn you all I’m likely to be random though, but I’ll also do my best to start making my posts a bit shorter. After all who doesn’t like a quickie every now-and-again?

For a long, long time (the past year, basically) I swore I’d never enjoy reading a book that wasn’t made of paper & ink. Then, in early May, I was bedazzled by the wonder that is Barnes & Nobles’ Nook and bought one for myself.

In early May, I swore I would still buy more paper than electronic books. My Nook was to be used, I said to myself, only to avoid buying hard covers (which I despise). Since early May my ebook to paper book purchasing ratio is 4:1.

Furthermore, I’ve discovered that when it comes to exploring & reading new authors, I feel more comfortable taking chances on ebooks. Something about the paper version feels like a commitment, and I’ve become more selective about my bookshelf collection.

The moral of this story (aside from the fact that I can’t follow through with a single promise to myself, apparently) is that people’s perceptions change. Maybe not as quickly as mine, but they do change. Even if you aren’t a fan of the ereaders personally, make sure that when you do get an agent you find one who’s savy about contracts for electronic books.

Why? Because there may be more people like me out there than you think. ;o)

Am I Ready For a Nook?

Morning All, hope everyone had a great weekend!

So ... over the past several days I've been doing a lot of internal debating. All along I've been one of those people who is lukewarm on the whole e-book/ e-reader deal. I still prefer books to anything else, but I can't deny the benefit of having an easily portable device that can hold far more reading options to choose from at any given time. It's led me to be pretty Switzerland about the whole thing.

But lately, I've been feeling a strong pull to just break down & purchase a Nook. (I have ZERO interest in getting an iPad, and I prefer B&N over Amazon ... sorry Kindle) I'm still debating. Quite frankly, the main reason I'm leaning toward an e-reader is for my general distaste for hardcover books - which is a post for another day. What I'd ultimately love to be able to do is buy new releases on my Nook & save myself from having to buy it in a hard cover format. I don't care if it's more expensive than the normal e-books because it's a new release (it should be). I just want options, dangit!

Only thing that's holding me back from getting one ... I'm not so sure the publishing industry is allowing new hardcover releases to be formatted for e-book so early. And if I have to wait six months to a year after the initial release to buy an e-book version, I'd rather just buy the trade paperback anyway.

Anyone already have one of the e-readers & have experiences to share with this? If you don't have one already are you thinking about getting one, or would hell have to freeze over first?
