Bookclub Discussion -- MY SOUL TO TAKE

Hello, Fellow Endeavorers!

Consider this all the intro needed to open our first monthly book club discussion:

Rachel Vincent's  "My Soul To Take"

Kaylee Cavanaugh doesn't see dead people, but she senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy at school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead, only Kaylee knows who'll be next.

If you've read this story (for the book club or on your own) feel free to jump in and join us.

For those participating in the discussion, be sure to book mark the post so you can come back & check on it once or twice throughout the weekend. Don't feel weird about replying directly to one another in the comments -- that's how online convos work.

As far as the type of comments allowed: There are no rules. I just ask you to please keep 2 things in mind:

1) There may be people reading the comments who haven't read the story yet, but would like to. If you can keep your comment spoiler free, great! If not, please type out "SPOILER ALERT" at the top and skip down several lines before leaving your comment. Give 'em a fair chance to avoid looking.

2)  Any and all opinions are welcomed . . . so long as they're in regards to the story/writing. No personal attacks/judgements on any of the authors/agents/publishers please.

Dive in -- I'll be leaving my comments inside as well!

Not quite sure what to talk about?  Feel free to steal some of these ideas:
-- Overall did you enjoy the story? Would you recommend it to a friend?
-- Do you plan to read the rest of the series?
-- Who was your favorite character? Why?
-- Were you satisfied with the ending?
-- What do you wish the author had done more of?
-- What do you wish the author had done less of?
-- Were the characters likable? Were they believable to you?

(Off topic sidenote: To those of you who've left me awards the past week or two, I'm not ignoring you. I promise to acknowledge next week)

I'll go first. ;o)

I enjoyed the story. I thought, for the most part, I thought the explanation was laid out pretty-well and was entertaining in the way a YA novel should be.

If I had to find something to nitpick, I would say I'd have preferred a little more flirtation/uncertainty between Kaylee & Nash before they sort of just wound up being in a relationship.

Then again, I've decided I'm a Tod girl. Not that there is anything wrong with Nash, and he's the guy you're supposed to be rooting for. But I have a weakness for grim reapers, apparently.

I agree about the flirty/uncertainty between Kaylee and Nash. It was like they were an instant couple. I prefer a bigger build up.

I'm not sure if I would continue with the series, even though I thought the book was great (loved the use of the folklore). I get a feeling it's a never ending one like The House of Night. I don't like those ones. I prefere the ones with only xx of books planned (like the Vampire Academy series).

Stina - Yeah, I think I'll eventually get around to reading more in the series, but I agree with you. If I feel like there is one big arc I need to get to the end of, I feel more of a need to read the next one ASAP.

I did like the twist at the end though. Again, I'm a Tod girl. ;o)

Tod was easily my favorite character. He seemed to have the most depth to me though. You learned a lot more about him through his actions and story than anyone.

This being my first real read in the YA genre, it was good. I would recommend it for a quick read (seeing as how I didn't get my copy until Monday) and will be lending it out to a few others already.

So, am I doing this right?

Tracy said...

Kindros -- you're definitely doing this right!

I agree that Tod was probably the one best explained through his actions. There was no need to hint at what he meant, because his actions spoke volumes about him.

And I'm so proud of you for reading your first YA!!

Thanks for holding this for us Tracy. I look forward to your next choice.

I haven't finished it yet,but I'm just now starting to get into it. The writing is really good and smooth. My nitpick is similar, in that I didn't feel like I got a chance to like or dislike Nash before they ended up together. I felt like it all moved way too fast, and Nash felt too hollow. BUT, like I said, I haven't finished yet and that may change. No one has really stuck out for me as a particularly fascinating character yet.

We'll see.....

Any thoughts on the next pick? Can we put Across the Universe on the list?? :)

I agree with you Tracy, I'm team Tod all the way. I root for him through the entire series so far and I have read all of them so far as they have been released. Nash is unimpressive to me. There is not enough there for the likability factor for me.

PK -- I haven't picked a selection for March yet. I'll do that next week. Though I kind of promised I'd switch to an adult geared novel for the next selection (since not everyone reads YA). So maybe we can look at ATU for April?

Regina -- It is sad to say that I found Nash more intriguing in the early goings when she thought he was sleeping around with a bunch of girls. It gave him just enough intrigue where you wanted to know if he was really like that. I think he just slipped into sweet & supportive a little too soon.

OOOO! I almost missed this entirely!!

I really enjoyed this one too, though it felt strange that Nash started out being untouchable and mysterious and then was just...her's. I mean, they explained it well enough but it just felt strange. More showing us why he and she were together instead of just saying he was drawn to her would have been nice.

And I'm a big Tod gal, though! Mmm Tod...

AND the ending was a surprise but I was a little disappointed at how it wasn't this small thing instead of a bigger thing...hopefully that is vague enough but you still get what I'm saying lol.
